The main and most popular way up. Besides the peaks and moorland, the park consists of montage forest with relics of old vegetation. Also, significant numbers of mammals and birds inhabit the area. We avoid the crowded Marangu route on Kilimanjaro, preferring to approach the mountain from the north by the lightly used Rongai route. Mammals include elephants, buffaloes, elands, duickers, foxes, leopards, baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys. The area is also frequented by a variety of colourful birds.

We recommend the Machame route for most ers, because taking an extra day during the climb allows for a slower pace, and gives hikers more time to adjust to the altitude, which reduces altitude sickness. The Machame route approaches Kilimanjaro through forest and moorland from the south - west and joins the Shira route before traversing beneath the southern ice fields of Kibo.

The Rongai route starts just south of Kenya- Tanzania border and has been almost unused for many years because the area was considered sensitive. Now open for climbing once again, experienced guides consider this ascent route to be both easier and more beautiful than the main Marangu trail.

Many customers use this route to descend instead of ascend. Either way it is after Mweka the next steepest route. It is also quite scenic and relatively infrequently used. This is much more attractive and exciting wilderness route. To climb the mountain, the ascent and descent takes between five and nine days. The mountain can be climbed by any normally fit person, with the assistance of a guide and porters. The park has six hiking routes through the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve: Marangu, Machame, Umbwe, Shira (Lemosho and Londorossi), Mweka and Rongai.

Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,5685m.and the fifth highest in Africa. It is best to allow three days for climbing Meru since it involves a 3,500m altitude trek.. You can add an extra day for acclimatisation if you prefer.
